Back on the treadmill… – 17 September 2018

So… been back at work for 2 weeks now and the whole summer focusing on improving my health situation seems like a distant memory. I can already sense that some elements of the progress that I had been feeling are starting to falter.

I am tired. Really tired. I have started to get the fuzziness back in my right leg and I nearly trip up the stairs about 3 times a day. So far I have managed to recover it each time but I fear it is only a matter of time before I take another tumble. So is it all work’s fault…? The 5.45am starts and the long days don’t help that’s for sure. Plus I don’t get as much time to focus on exercises, Reiki, stretching and all the other things I have been really committed to doing. Everything just seems to be starting to get to be a little bit like hard work again and that I am on some sort of relentless treadmill, trying to squeeze everything in.

I have a good feeling about the personal training sessions, though. I had my first session with Scott last week which was assessing my needs. While he looks young enough to be my son, he seemed to get the measure of me pretty quickly just from watching me walk and what was needed in order to help me:  strengthening of quads and glutes in order to stabilise my pelvis and right knee. This will make my walking more stable and hopefully help relieve the back pain. On the plus side, he decreed that my core strength is good which Sonja, my Pilates guru, will be pleased to hear.

What I am not entirely convinced about, if I am completely honest, is whether  it is actually possible to strengthen up the muscles which have been ‘switched off’ and wasted for whatever reason. Will the messages from my brain still reach the muscles? Or has the MS has disrupted the ability of those messages to get through? Who knows? Going to give it a bloody good try though.
